The Eternal Renovation

Four years ago I purchased a old, run down house with the intention of renovating it. The house was bad…. I mean really bad. When the owner showed me the house there was a giant pile of dog poo in the middle of the bedroom. One friend ran outside and puked it smelled so bad. My friends and my Realtor told me I was crazy for even thinking about buying the house… and that was pretty much all I needed to convince me to do so (I got it for a steal). Keep in mind that all the pictures below are from the showing:

My plan was to remodel the house just enough to make it livable for a few years. Maybe some fresh paint, new carpet and some new fixtures. My thought was that I would live there for a bit, then tear it down and build my dream house. That was the plan, but let’s just say things didn’t turn out that way. First it was the carpet, then it was the walls, then it was the windows, then the bathroom and so on. I wound up completely gutting the house and doing the majority of the work myself. I added central air conditioning, bigger windows, a new kitchen, a new bathroom and combined the two small bedrooms upstairs in one giant master.

It took me a good six months to get the house to a point where it was livable. During that time I slept on a blow up mattress on the floor of a friends house. When I was finally able to move in I was so happy. I was proud of myself for taking a risk, turning my vision into a reality (and proving the naysayers wrong).

I wish I could say it was over when I moved in. A few months later I decided to build a deck and dock.

I have to say the deck ROCKs for house parties in the summer.

The changes have continued over time. I am getting the house painted right now (it is what inspired me to do this post). I am happy Tara convinced me to hire someone to do the work, but it just doesn’t give me the same feeling of accomplishment as when I do it myself. I feel like I am cheating. It makes me want to do more around the house. I need to build something!

My tools have been silent too long. Two summers ago I decided to build a floating dock because I was going nuts. I feel the same way now. Construction is like meditation for me, I don’t think about anything else… just the task at hand.

Floating Dock

"Floaty Dock"

The crazy thing is the property I bought actually has two houses right next to each other (originally known as ghetto 1 and 2). While I renovated the one that I live in the other one has remained relatively untouched except some new paint and carpet. I can hear the other house calling me…. but I am torn. These houses are old, they were built in the 1930’s and no matter what I do they will never be the modern home I would like to eventually live in. Do I want to keep dumping money into them just because I desire to work with my hands? I still want to bulldoze these houses in a couple years. The more sweat equity (and hard cash) I invest the more they are part of me and the harder that decision will be.

Ghetto

I am not sure what to do. Has anyone else faced something like this? I have got to do something. Maybe another Floaty Dock? I need a weekend project people!!!

Twitter T-Shirts Start Popping Up

It appears that the very first person (that I know of anyway) has downloaded the template I provided for custom Twitter T-Shirts. Cara Couture of North Carolina grabbed the design and showed it off at BarcampCLT.

I was happy to see the shirt, but bummed I never got a mention on Twitter : ( I was all for sharing my idea but I thought people would at least give me a shoutout for providing everything. Oh well, high expectations I guess. I am still happy I shared and would do it again.

Blu Frog Energy Drink Launch

The people at the Limu Company invited me to help launch their new energy drink Blue Frog. I gave a presentation / pep rally on social media and I have to say it was the best audience I have ever presented to. There was a tremendous amount of energy in the room and I felt like it was all being channeled through to me. I managed to snag this awesome picture while on stage with my X-Shot.

It was no small stage, my mug was being blasted on the screens on each side. The entire event was recorded, I will share the video when I get a copy of it. Apparently people liked it : )

I had a blast with Missy Ward and the whole Orlando gang that showed up for the inauguration party at IZEA today. Special thanks to Quaker for all the oatmeal, my stomach is still full from breakfast. I am so proud of our country and the historic election of our first African American President. Obama rocked the inauguration speech… and Aretha Franklin rocked the biggest bow ever affixed to a human head.

Ted’s Magic Turkey Chili Surprise

Today Tara convinced me to cook turkey chili for the first time. I decided to ask for recipes via Twitter and received plenty of ideas from my friends. Here are a few you might want to check out:

Crock Pot Turkey Chili (HOT)
Chili Recipe

I decided to take a little of each of these recipes and come up with my own recipe. My recipe includes two of my favorite ingredients – beer and easy. This recipe is designed for a crockpot, it takes about 15 minutes to prepare and 4 hours to cook.

Ted's Magic Turkey Chili Surprise

Ingredients:

  1. 1 lb. ground turkey
  2. 1 medium onion (diced)
  3. 1 small green and 1 small red pepper (diced)
  4. 4 long green finger peppers (diced)
  5. 1 can rotel – Mexican flavored diced tomatoes with chilies
  6. 1 can of Goya black beans
  7. 1 small can tomato paste
  8. 1/2 square Bakers unsweetend chocolate
  9. 4 tablespoons ground chili powder
  10. 2 tablespoons cumin
  11. 2 tablespoons of pepper.
  12. 10 tablespoons of Cholula hot sauce
  13. 1 bottle of Negra Medelo

Ted's Magic Turkey Chili Surprise

Instructions:

  1. Brown 1 lb. of ground turkey in a pan with a little bit of olive oil.
  2. Dump all the ingredients in a crock pot set on high.
  3. Open another beer. Drink. Smile. Yes…you are awesome.
  4. Wait four hours.
  5. Tweet out to your friends that you are cooking #tedsmagicchili.
  6. Serve with sour cream and sharp cheddar cheese in a bowl.

You may be asking yourself what’s the surprise!?! The surprise is that a hour or two after eating this recipe you will start burping beautiful chili burps that bring the magic back over and over.

Bloggers to Rock SeaWorld

Over the past few weeks IZEA has developed a relationship with the fine people at Busch Entertainment. Busch operates SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, Aquatica and other adventure parks around the country. We are working on a variety of initiatives together, the first of which is an exclusive blogger hard hat tour of Manta next month.

Manta SeaWorld

Manta Roller Coaster at SeaWorld

Manta is a brand new roller coaster scheduled to open this Summer. Riders will journey face-down, in a horizontal position, underneath the belly of a coaster train shaped as a giant manta, with a wing span of 12 feet. I had the opportunity to see a pre-release video of the Manta experience and I have to say it looks incredible. If I had the money I would build one in my backyard and invite you over, but it may just be easier to go to SeaWorld together when it opens.

I was asked to select 5 bloggers to participate in a hard hat tour the first weekend in February. These bloggers will join me in Orlando to go behind the scenes and discover SeaWorld like few others have:

Alex Schekhttp://www.faywerwayer.com (@aschek)
Lucretia Pruitthttp://www.geekmommy.com (@geekmommy)
Julia Royhttp://www.juliaroy.com (@juliaroy)
Wendy Piersallhttp://www.sparkplugging.com (@emom)
Sarah Austionhttp://www.pop17.com (@pop17)

In addition, SeaWorld was kind enough to provide me with tickets for all IZEA team members last Friday. We had the chance to explore the park and familiarize ourselves with all that it has to offer. I had an absolute blast! I saw sharks, dolphins and penguins… not to mention I got to ride Kraken.

All that other stuff was cool, but without a doubt the highlight of my day was the video below. I don’t want to ruin what happened, just remember it was 40 degrees outside and I was wearing a cotton shirt.

I am extremely excited to be working with SeaWorld on the Manta hard hat tour and other projects not yet announced. They are great people to work worth, are eager to get into social media and most of all they have seen this blog and they still like me : )

If you haven’t already you should join SocialSpark and get on IZEA‘s radar. Who knows… maybe you will find yourself at SeaWorld with me some day soon.

Where Did That Hair Come From?

Last night I took a shower and shaved before I went to bed. My face was smooth without a hair in sight. I woke up this morning to find one random hair in the middle of my chin. It was darker and thicker than my normal chin hair and a good 2 days worth of growth for me.

What the heck is that all about? Is this some sort of mid 30s thing? Am I going to wake up with random hairs all over my body now? Anyone else have something like this happen?

Twitter Logo TShirts

The custom Twitter logo tshirts I designed were were a big hit at CES in Las Vegas. I had random people stopping me on the convention floor asking me where they could buy them. Even though it’s fun being the only person with a custom Twitter shirt like this it is more fun to spread the love and help others to grow their followers.

How to get your own Twitter T-Shirt

I have decided to share the EPS source file for the Twitter design I used on my shirt. You can use this file to easily create your own shirt by following these simply instructions:

1. Download the EPS Twitter logo t-shirt design.

2. Open the file in Illustrator and customize the text block with your name. Be sure to convert your text to outlines to avoid any font issues. The red background is only there for preview, delete it and save the file out as an EPS.

3. Go to Customink.com and choose a t-shirt style. Upload the file through their design tool. The video below brings you through step by step.

4. Pick your sizes and quantity and you are good to go!

I hope you enjoy your new t-shirt. If you order one please be sure to leave a comment here with a link back to your photo.

Q: What’s Better Than a Panchero’s Burrito?

A: 5 free Pancheros burritos!

I want to thank Joel from Pancheros for sending a little Pancheros gift package to me. Apparently he liked the post I did about Pancheros using Twitter and has put some of the ideas in motion. I already hooked Joe Sales up with a free Burrito card, we are going lunch tomorrow at noon. I am going to give the other 4 gift cards away to the first 4 (non-IZEA) people that meet us tomorrow for a little Pancheros tweetup at the downtown location. Show up and you may get a free burrito.
